As herbivores, it is natural for horses to consume herbs. Herbs are often fed in the whole, unprocessed state as powders, or as extracts or tinctures. For many horse owners, herbal supplements in the powder form are most convenient because they can be combined uniformly, mix easily with feed, and are convenient to store. Extracts, or tinctures, take up less storage space as they are more concentrated and are given as a few drops. This form is often more expensive, but in some cases appears to work more rapidly.

Powdered herbal blends can be combined with a small amount of warm water and mixed into feed. Supplements that are fed on a long-term basis should be given 6 days/week.
